実は、いま企業が求める「コミュニケーション能力」は、完全にダブルバインド(二重拘束)の状態にあります。ダブルバインドとは、簡単に言えば二つの矛盾したコマンドが強制されている状態のことです。

たとえば日ごろ、「我が社は、社員の自主性を重んじる」と言われている社員が、何かの案件について上司に相談に行くと、「そんなことも自分で判断できんのか。いちいち相談にくるな」と突き放されてしまいます。ところが、いったんトラブルが起こると「重要な案件は何でもきちんと相談しろ。なんで相談しなかったんだ」と上司に怒られてしまう――。

現在、表向き、企業が要求するコミュニケーション能力とは、「グローバル・コミュニケーション・スキル」=「異文化理解能力」です。異なる文化・価値観を持った人に対しても、きちんと自分の主張を伝えることができる、文化的な背景の違う人の意見も、その背景(コンテクスト)を理解し、時間をかけて説得し、妥協点を見いだし、そのような能力を以てグローバルな経済環境でも存分に力を発揮できることです。

しかし、実は日本の企業は、自分たちも気がつかないうちに、もうひとつのコミュニケーション能力を求めています。それは、「上司の意図を察して機敏に行動する」「会議の空気を読んで反対意見はいわない」「輪を乱さない」といった従来型のコミュニケーション能力です。

いま、就活をしている学生たちは、あきらかに二つの矛盾したコミュニケーション能力を同時に要求されています。しかも、何より始末に悪いのは、要求している側が、その矛盾に気がついていない点です。
